An Introduction to Modern Calligraphy Workshop | Paper Mountain, Perth, Western Australia

Let's face it, it's hard to ignore. Hand lettering has taken the world by storm and even more so in recent times! The pointed pen is just one of the many lettering tools out there and I feel so privileged to be able to teach this beautiful art form.

This month, I ran a 2.5 hour class at Paper Mountain, Northbridge which is an awesome artist-run initiative precious to the Perth creative community. It was a great morning with beautiful light, yummy sweets and a ballin' good time nerding out about all things calligraphy.

Perth modern calligraphy workshop

If you've always wanted to try your hand at calligraphy, this introductory short course is perfect for you. At your seat, you will find an essential starter kit of quality supplies including a wooden straight pen holder, Nikko G and Brause Blue Pumpkin nibs, 30ml jar of Japanese Sumi ink, a Rhodia grid pad, calligraphy practice sheets and lastly, a complementary Small Brown Writes beginner's guide to modern calligraphy. The morning starts with learning how to prime your new nib and the correct way of holding a straight pen holder. We then go through some basic strokes and warm up drills. Usually by the end of this point, beginner calligraphers start to feel more confident in holding a new pen and with how ink flows off the nib when applying different pressures.

After a short break, we continue on to letter and word formations. Along the way, we'll also discover that we can break the rules of traditional calligraphy to add a modern twist and create a style that is entirely yours. This can be daunting at first but it really is just about getting pen to paper and doing it. Some students get the hang of it pretty quickly. Others find it harder to get used to a new way of 'writing', and I explain in class why I use the term 'writing' with quotation marks, but no one should feel the pressure of getting it perfect the first time. This class is all about patting down a strong foundation and knowing the techniques and drills you can practice at home for your own self-improvement.

Beginner workshops run periodically throughout the year. If you are interested in joining me for a relaxing Saturday morning of picking up a new skill, check for upcoming dates to enrol yourself in a class or contact me and get yourself on a waiting list to secure your spot in the next one.
